Male Sexual Dysfunction - Problems and Solutions

Sexual dysfunction is quite common, despite the common beliefs and irrespective of gender, age or sexual orientation. While talking about male sexual dysfunction, it is helpful to understand that such a sexual problem can affect anyone, for which the causes can be both biological and psychological.


Sexual dysfunction in men essentially refers to the inability to perform sexually. This occurs when one cannot get or maintain an erection to participate in sexual intercourse or to derive satisfaction. However, other common problems also include premature ejaculation, inhibited sexual desires or delayed ejaculation, and low libido.


Although erectile dysfunction is not always a cause for concern, continuation of erection troubles may be a symptom for underlying health conditions or affect your mental health. The sexual reaction cycle goes in the following order: appetence, arousal, orgasm and resolution, depending on which disorders in sexual function can be classified. Hence, there is a need to understand and distinguish between partial functional impairment and those dysfunctions which require treatment.


Erectile Dysfunction


The most common male sexual dysfunction is failure or trouble to have an erection or arousal. While it is not very common in young males, mostly men above 40 years of age suffer from ED. The process involved in male sexual arousal is quite complex to include the brain, emotions, hormones, nerves, blood vessels and muscles. An erection is caused due to increased blood flow into the penis, which is stimulated by sexual thoughts or direct contact with the penis.


Excitement in a man would cause the penis muscles to relax, which allows increased blood flow through the arteries to fill up the two chambers inside. With the chambers being filled up with blood, the penis grows rigid.


Various psychological and physical factors or sometimes, a combination of both could result in trouble in having or to maintain an erection. The causes can vary which include diseases that affect the blood flow, for instance, hardening of the arteries, nervous disorders, injury to the penis, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and Perkison’s diseas. Moreover, relationship problems, sleep disorder or stress, depression and performance pressure can have severe effects too. Erectile dysfunction also results from unhealthy habits such as smoking, alcohol consumption, overeating and lack of exercise.

Ejaculation Disorders


Distresses with ejaculation includes premature ejaculation (ejaculation occurs too soon), inhibited or delayed ejaculation (when ejaculation takes a very long time) or retrograde ejaculation (rather than ejaculation being through the penis, it is forced back into the bladder).


As is the case with other male sexual dysfunctions, studies suggest that ejaculation disorders too can be caused due to a combination of physical and psychological factors. Sexual repression or any such history, affects as much as stress or low self-confidence or an unhealthy relationship with the partner. Alcohol or substance abuse, smoking, side effects from other medicines are among the few causes to be on lookout for. Diabetic nerve damage is the most common reason for retrograde nerve damage.


Low Libido


Low libido refers to decreased interest or desire on sex. The definition is varied according to what each person considers as sexual satisfaction.


Apart from the above mentioned factors, this may be caused due to low levels of male sex hormone, ie, testosterone. Testosterone is responsible for male sex drive, sperm production, muscle, bone and hair. If the level of the hormone decreases, it could affect your body as well as mood.


In such a case, treatment would mean raising the level of testosterone by hormone replacement therapies through injections, gels and patches.


A counsellor may be recommended to consult in case of psychological causes such as anxiety, depression, or guilt aroused through inability to perform sexually.

According to this school, to prepare for pregnancy, it is important to develop sattva or a calm, safe, and peaceful environment. A specific branch of Ayurveda called rasayana is used traditionally for this. There are four types of this that cover almost all aspects of a person’s health. Ahara rasayana pertains to the food intake and digestive process, Vihara rasayana deals with the lifestyle, Achar rasayana is about the behaviour, and Aushadha rasayana, pertaining to herbs.


At least a few months before the planned conception, the parents are expected to introspect their lifestyles keeping these four aspects in mind and detox their bodies to prepare for the event in all respects. Herbs like Kapikacchu, Gokshura, Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Yashtimadhu are especially prescribed for men to increase sperm count and mobility, quality of the semen, levels of testosterone, and the overall fertility. Ashwagandha and Shatavari are also beneficial for the woman to maintain hormonal balance . 


Therapeutic Body Practices

Only a healthy body can conceive a healthy child. Body therapies, as prescribed by Ayurveda, are said to release tensions, body impurities, and energy trapped within the body. Doing so will help the body nourish itself, revitalize the minds, and strengthen the immunity system . Shirodhara, abhyanga, marma therapy, nasya, and basti are some of the therapeutic practices that can be followed.


Body massages and yoga have also been found effective. Balancing the Energies

According to the philosophy of Ayurveda, during pregnancy, there is a downward-moving energy to support the foetus called apana vata (adrenal energy) and an upward-moving energy called prana vata (mental energy) that supports the mother’s sattva and emotional stability. During the period before conception, both these energies must be balanced in both parents to create sattva. Taking care of one’s lifestyle can bring in this balance which can improve the mother’s chances of conceptions and the father’s quality and number of sperms.


Ayurveda After Conception

After a child’s conception, Ayurveda prescribes a few measures to ensure a healthy gestation period. They are based on three important aspects: ahara (or nutrition), vihara (or lifestyle), and vichara (or thoughts). Diet remains one of the most important measures to keep the body and mind healthy. A pregnant woman’s diet should not include items which are Atiguru or difficult for the body to digest, Atiushna or too hot, Atitikshna that is sharp food like too spicy, Viruddha or unwholesome food. Milk should be an important constituent according to them as it is rich in calcium, lactose, protein, and fat. In case of complications, it is advised that the woman be administered drugs (by her doctor) that are Mridu (soft), Madhura (sweet), and Sheeta (cold)

Diet must still be closely monitored for the mother, even after her delivery. The food should be less in oil and spices. It should include light foods like khichadi, soup, mildly cooked vegetables, etc. Date powder or Shatavari Kalpa and Dhatri Rasayan are recommended to boost the healthy production of breastmilk for the child 


A lot of women, across the world, hope to be mothers but are often unable to do so due to the varying lifestyle patterns that increase stress and other hormonal problems. Fertility Basics

  • The reproductive system of a woman produces hormones that result in ovulation. It is when from one of the ovaries, an egg is released. During the childbearing years of a woman, it happens once every month.

  • The reproductive system of a man produces sperm cells. Post puberty, daily, generation of new sperm cells takes place.

  • During about five or six days prior to ovulation, a man and a woman must engage in sexual intercourse.

  • When the man ejaculates, due to a series of muscular contractions, sperm cells or the semen are/is forced out of the man’s penis.

  • In the cervical area of the woman, semen gets collected after intercourse, and into the cervical mucus of the woman, sperm cells swim.

  • The sperm swims through the opening of the cervix, into the uterus. It further swims into the fallopian tubes from the uterus. 

  • The healthiest of sperms manage to linger inside the fallopian tubes, till the time an egg comes along. 

  • From the ovaries, once an egg is released, it is guided into the fallopian tubes very gently.

  • In a moment of fertilization, one of the sperms eventually meets the egg in the fallopian tubes.

  • Post ovulation, the reproductive system of the woman releases new hormones that make ‘endometrium.’

  • The embryo or the fertilized egg goes through cell divisions. Further, into the uterus, it travels down the fallopian tube. 

  • As the Uterus is reached by the embryo, it implants itself into the lining, eventually. It happens after about 4 to 10 days of fertilization.

  • Post implantation, the embryo starts to create placental cells and fetal cells. The pregnancy hormone, or the hCG begins to get produced. 

  • There is enough hCG circulating after about one week or 14 days of ovulation, to give a positive result when a pregnancy test is done. 


Conditions for Getting Pregnant

No Stress 

Fertility basics include no stressing! While expressing your concern to someone in the family or your friend circle, words like “do not worry,” “stay relaxed” might be said to you. And it is understandable that it is easier said than done, but stress does take a toll on one’s mental and physical health, whether good or bad. Watching the Weight

Unless the relationship is undergoing a major crisis, most partners tend to respond with no. Realise how important your partner is to you and try to reach a compromise where you both get some and give up some to reach a middle ground. However, if, in fact, you do think having a child is more important to you, it is probably a red sign that you need to reconsider the relationship and realign your priorities.


Prepare Yourself


While it may be true that many around you have started a family, remember that this is not for everyone. Being excited about the pregnancy result is one thing and going through the nine months, labour, to finally raising a child, isn’t as easy as it may seem. Make sure that you are prepared for what's coming up your way before you make a decision. Not only is this going to require financial and emotional commitment but, as a mother, physical commitments as well. Taking care of a child is a commitment you will have to fulfil for years to come. Remember, you are under no pressure to have a child by a certain age or time. It's absolutely acceptable for you to have a committed, happy marriage without a child being a part of it – if that is what makes you and your partner happy.

So having sex during these five days increases your chances of getting pregnant.           

With these scientific studies, we would like to break the myth that women can get pregnant anytime. It is simply not true. Conception happens only within the time period of the fertile window.


Understanding the Process of Ovulation

The process of ovulation in the female reproductive system allows the egg to be released from the ovary. The egg then travels through the fallopian tubes and gets embedded in the walls of the uterus. The best method to do this is to make a note of your menstrual pattern so that you are able to get the right number of days that consist of your menstrual cycle. These are the number of days starting from the first day of your period to the first day of your next cycle. The process of ovulation occurs in the mid-point of this cycle. Ovulation also brings about a lot of changes in the body. So this can be another method to indicate the exact time of ovulation in the body.
