There are different types of contraceptives or birth control methods that are available in India. Families follow contraceptive methods to help with proper birth planning for their baby and the growth of the family.
The use of contraceptives during the sexual act is to prevent the process of reproduction. This can be done in different ways. It acts as a barrier against the fusion of an egg and a sperm. A contraceptive halts the formation of an egg in the body. Some other birth control methods stop the sperm and egg from attaching to the lining of the womb.
Here are a few birth control methods that you should know more about:
In simple words, it means to decide not to have sexual intercourse. But it has different meanings to different people. While some people choose to stay away from any or all sexual activity, others engage in everything else other than vaginal or anal penetration.
Abstinence as a type of contraceptive is 100 percent effective.
Also known as ‘coitus interruptus’, it is a practice of removing the penis from the vagina before ejaculation to prevent pregnancy. This pulling out method avoids the sperm from entering the vagina and reaching the sperm.
This birth control method isn’t as effective as other methods. An estimated 1 in 5 couples practising withdrawal over a year do get pregnant. But it has very few side effects and is followed by most couples.
Use of Devices
Male Condom :
Condoms are a commonly used contraceptive method by many people. It not only prevents pregnancy but it also helps to tackle sexually transmitted diseases. External condoms, worn on the penis are thin latex designed to stop the sperm from travelling into the vagina.
Male condoms are proved to be 98% effective. This means 2 out of 100 people will become pregnant even if they use a male condom. In India, condoms are easily available at stores and medical shops.
Female Condom :
This birth control method is not as common as a male condom. Similar to the actions of a male condom, a female condom also acts as a barrier against the sperm. It is worn inside the vagina.
There are no serious side effects of using a female condom. Women who are not comfortable touching their genital area should avoid using a female condom.
Although this is not a common practise in India, it is one of the most effective types of contraception. A doctor can help you determine the right size of the diaphragm that fits your body type. It is a soft rubber device and has a flexible ring that helps to attach the cup-shaped device to fit inside the vagina.
It is said to be 94% effective and comfortable to use for women. It can also be reused for 2-3 years.
Contraceptive injections release hormones known as progestogen into your bloodstream to prevent pregnancy. It is taken by women and is said to be 94 percent effective. The effect of the ‘shot’ will last for 8 to 13 weeks. But the effect of the injection reduces if you forget to take the next injection on time.
This birth control method brings about side effects such as weight gain, headaches, mood swings and irregular bleeding. Other rare risk factors are also seen as a result of these shots. Therefore, it is advisable to take it under your doctor’s prescription.
Intrauterine Device :
This device is placed in the uterus of the patient through a medical procedure. The sperm is prevented from reaching the egg by this ‘T’ shaped device. It reduces the chances of getting pregnant to less than 1 per cent in women. It has a lasting effect than other birth control methods and is hassle-free.
Contraceptive Pills :
These birth control pills contain synthetically structured hormones that prevent fertilization in women. Its mechanism works as it disrupts the natural hormone functions in the body. It interferes with the ovulation cycle and its release. The pills also affect the linings of the womb which prevents the egg from attaching to the lining. On consultation, if required, your doctor can help you with a prescription for the same.
Permanent Birth Control Methods
There are different types of permanent contraceptives for both females and males. A surgical procedure known as tube ligation refers to the process of the woman’s fallopian tubes being blocked, tied or cut. Tube implant on the other hand inserts small metal springs in each fallopian tube. Vasectomy in men is a surgical procedure that cuts, ties or seals the male vasa deferentia to prevent the release of sperm.
This method of permanent sterilization is quite popular among couples who have a specific family plan in order. The procedure is not only expensive but also difficult to be reversed through medical surgeries.
There is a lot of information about different types of contraceptives that you can access. But it is always best to consult a doctor. Each individual has a different medical case when compared to another. Seeking help from a professional will also help you to follow the procedure in a healthy manner.
