The thought of being a mother is overwhelmingly exciting and beautiful but growing a human inside yourself can also be quite exhausting. Therefore, it is quite common to feel more tired than usual, especially during the first trimester, that is the first three months after conception. 87.2% to 96.5% women go through fatigue caused due to stress during their pregnancy that can negatively affect their psychological health. Studies show that 74% of the women had nausea lasting for an average of 34.6 days combined with vomiting.


Fatigue, which is a feeling of consistently decreased energy can result from many diseases such as anaemia, infection, hypothyroidism etc. Studies also show that fatigue increases in the third trimester of pregnancy. While some women tend to have severe fatigue, others may not and hence, it is important to understand the causes and effects of the hormonal changes your body is going through in order to have a healthy pregnancy.



Why the constant lethargy?

Although fatigue is common in expecting mothers, severe fatigue can also be a result of inappropriate family support. Poor communication with your partner and obstetrician can contribute significantly to the constant feeling of nausea, anxiety and tiredness in the first trimester. Moreover, low sexual activity and social interaction are also correlated with low maternal feeling of well being. More often than not, the first trimester fatigue can be attributed to a younger age and lower pre-pregnancy levels of iron, ferritin and haemoglobin while low folic acid and less total sleep contributes to the problem in the third trimester. 


Why should you pay heed to it?

While the cause of fatigue during pregnancy may be variable, the effects may range from being very negligible to severe. Most women have difficulty in getting a good sleep as a result of constant hormonal changes in the body. According to various studies, sleep disorder is common for 25% women in the first trimester and 75% women in the third trimester. This also leads to various psychiatric disorders such as recurrent depressive episodes and anxiety disorders. On such scenarios, women are likely to sleep less than six hours during early pregnancy, which increases the odds of excessive daytime sleeping and exhaustion. On a much riskier scale, excessive fatigue during pregnancy may lead to antenatal morbidity. 


What can you do?

We understand that all of this may be quite frightening and huge, especially for a first-time mom. However, there are a lot of things you can do to avoid fatigue and excessive stress during your pregnancy. Taking a few simple, yet right steps would go a long way to a healthy delivery. For instance, regular exercise and warm-ups can be super helpful. Adequate, uninterrupted sleep and appropriate nutrition can significantly boost your mental and physical health. 


Here are a few tips to give you a head start on your journey. 


  • Rest: 

Allow yourself to be well rested and maintain a proper sleep schedule. Avoiding fluids before going to bed would cut down the number of times you might have to wake up for a washroom break. However, drinking a cup of chamomile tea definitely helps to calm down and get a good sleep. Light scented candles and listen to soothing music  would reduce your stress further. 


  • Moderate exercise or yoga: 

Joining yoga classes during pregnancy not only helps to maintain your energy level and reduce stress but can also improve social interactions and therefore, improve your mental health. There are added benefits of befriending other to-be mothers and getting a tip or two if you are primiparous.  If yoga is not your thing, you could always go for a thirty minutes brisk walk in the park nearby. 


  • A balanced diet: 

The importance of a healthy and balanced diet cannot be stressed enough. It is important to have an adequate amount of iron, calories, protein etc. Staying hydrated is another important aspect to avoid fatigue or tiredness. 


  • Adjusting your schedule: 

This is something many of us tend to ignore and yet, it is crucial to understand that you should not be overstressing yourself during those nine months. Try to get your work done by preparing a schedule for yourself so that you can have enough time for your rest. If you are not being able to balance your professional and personal life, make sure that you seek out help. You might be surprised to find out how many of your loved ones would be eager to extend a helping hand.



It is normal to undergo a myriad of emotions, all at once during your pregnancy. It is also perfectly fine to be just dozing and lying around or napping during your first few weeks. Do not be anxious about not doing something right because no matter how many books or articles or blogs you read, your hormonal changes are yours alone and it is not necessary for you to always go by the books. Consult your obstetrician regularly and make sure you are on the right diet. And of course, do not forget to keep yourself happy!

Sarah Krieger, a registered dietician and spokeswoman on prenatal nutrition for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in St. Petersburg, Florida has highlighted the importance of consuming protein-rich foods during pregnancy. According to Kriegar, protein is a ‘builder-nutrient’ since it is chiefly involved in the development of organs such as the brain and the heart.


Moreover, since proteins are a constituent found in every cell of the body and are vital in the making of muscles, hair, nails, skin, etc.  they also contribute in the growth and repair of tissues, regulation of normal muscle function, producing enzymes and hormones, transportation of oxygen through blood as well as building antibodies and bettering the immune system of the baby. Some of the commonly available food items rich in protein include- fish, meat and poultry, eggs, nuts, tofu, beans, lentils, and milk, cheese and other dairy products.



Vitamins such as folic acid which plays a major role in preventing birth defects in the newborn’s brain and spine, is contained in leafy greens like spinach, fenugreek leaves, kale, cabbage, broccoli, beans, legumes, oranges, whole grains like wheat, rice, whole grain pasta, etc, nuts, and fortified foods like breakfast cereals. It is a B Vitamin and is crucial in the body to make new cells and produce DNA. It is generally advisable for pregnant women to take at least 600 micrograms of folic acid a day under the supervision of her obstetrician.



Essential minerals such as Calcium, is considered vital in building up the baby’s teeth and bones while inadequacy of the same can culminate in deficiency especially in the mother as the baby will draw the calcium from the mothers teeth and bones to fulfil it’s needs. The best sources of calcium are- dairy products including milk, paneer, cheese, yoghurt, etc. and green vegetables such as- spinach, broccoli, etc. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that pregnant women aged 19 and above need at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day.


Another vital mineral which should be a mandatory addition to the diet of a pregnant woman is Iron. It is advisable that pregnant women must take 27 milligrams of iron a day which helps in moving oxygen from the mother’s lungs to the rest of her body and to the baby’s body as well. Moreover, iron is also essential in making additional supply of blood in the mother and baby thus, reducing the risk of iron deficiency anemia which can make the mother feel tired and also result in small babies at term or pre term babies. Expecting women, especially vegetarian moms can consume iron-rich foods with a good source of vitamin C at the same meal to increase the absorption of iron from food. ACOG recommends a glass of orange juice at breakfast with an iron-fortified cereal as an example. 


Healthy Fats

Expectant mothers should consume mainly unsaturated or healthy fats like monounstaurated fats (avocados, olive oil, groundnut oil, nuts, etc) and polyunsaturated fats (omega 3 fats like safflower oil, sunflower oil, flax seeds, walnuts, etc) during pregnancy and stay away from saturated and trans fats.



In addition, there are certain limits and restrictions which pregnant women must adhere to. For instance, caffeine intake should be controlled as well as fish containing high levels of mercury should be avoided. Besides this, alcohol, raw meat, raw eggs, unpasteurized milk and unwashed fruits and vegetables must be completely avoided to prevent food borne illnesses by the expectant mother.

Am I pregnant? Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy

Unsure if you are pregnant? Missing your period, implantation bleeding, food aversion, frequent urination, fatigue and morning sickness are some classic pregnancy signs and symptoms.

Classic signs of Pregnancy

Apart from the obvious signs of missing your menstrual cycle, you should be looking out for the following:


  • Implantation bleeding

The common synonym for this would be ‘spotting’ which is light period or losing a little blood. This occurs when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus about 10 to 14 days after conception. Then again, not all women go through implantation bleeding. The colour of your bleeding may vary as well, to pink, red or brown accompanied by mild, moderate or severe cramps. It usually lasts for less than three days.


Therefore, make sure to eat healthy and avoid any kind of food that leads to heavy bleeding.


  • Morning sickness and fatigue

Well, if you are nauseous and running to the washroom every once in a while, you definitely need to check with your gynecologist. Although morning sickness is more common after a month of pregnancy, you never know what your constant state of fatigue and nausea is pointing at. This is because during pregnancy, the levels of progesterone in the body soar which makes you feel sleepy. Normally, you should be looking out for these signs within four to six weeks of your last cycle.


  • Tender, swollen breasts

As the estrogen level starts to rise in the body, with conception, breasts start to feel sore, full, sensitive, tingly or even painful. This is one of the first messages of pregnancy, although it may not feel very different from PMS breast. A slight silver lining: this discomfort in fact decreases gradually into your months of pregnancy. Remember that your areolas darken and increase in diameter gradually following the conception, along with the probability of tiny bumps around them. These are minute changes that many women fail to notice.


  • Frequency of Urination

A heads up - you might find yourself going to the toilet frequently. This is because the amount of blood increases during pregnancy which leads your kidneys to gear up and filter out the extra waste in your blood from the baby on board. Moreover, your growing uterus will start pushing on your bladder as your progesterone levels increase and thus the constant need to pee.

  • Mood Swings

If you feel moody during your PMS, you might change that opinion during your pregnancy. The rush of hormones in your body can make you exceptionally emotional right during the four weeks into your pregnancy. That’s okay and completely normal. All you need to do is pamper yourself during these times. It is also the responsibility of your partner to be there for you.   • Food aversions

  • Bloating and constipation

Very much like your menstrual symptoms, bloating is also a sign of increased progesterone which makes your digestive tract slow and traps gas inside your intestine. As a result, feeling constipated is normal, which again increases the feeling of abdominal bloating.


  • High blood pressure and dizziness

If you often track your pressure, you might notice sudden high or normal blood pressure drop in the early stages of pregnancy which will cause dizziness due to dilated blood vessels. But this, as a sign of pregnancy is quite difficult to determine because high blood pressure might be present beforehand. Be sure to switch to pregnancy friendly exercises and drink enough water.

  • Nasal congestion and raised BBT

A blocked or stuffy nose is often a sign of pregnancy, this is due to increasing hormone level and blood production which causes mucous membranes in your nose to swell, dry out and bleed easily. In addition, you may notice raised basal body temperature. The temperature increase occurs slightly soon after ovulation and remains so until your next period. Everything You Need To Know About C section Delivery

Want to know more about Caesarean or C- section Delivery? We've got you covered on everything you need to know about Caesarean delivery of your baby.

As you approach the end of your third trimester, you would already have a birthing plan ready. Whether it is a normal birth or a C – section, you may have questions, doubts and apprehensions. Worry not; we have compiled some fundamental information about the Caesarean delivery method for you.


What is a Caesarean or C-section Delivery?

To put it very simply, during this procedure, your board-certified obstetrician will make an incision on your stomach and uterus to bring your newborn into this world. You will be administered an anaesthetic and you would not feel any pain. Your doctor will advise you to undergo this procedure if complications arise in your pregnancy and it is not safe to undergo a natural birth process.


When Should You Undergo a C-section?

A C-Section can be pre-planned depending on your existing conditions or it can be initiated under emergency conditions if vaginal delivery poses a risk to you or the baby. 


Planned C-Sections are usually performed between 37-40 weeks if you have one or more of these conditions.


  • A history of Caesarean delivery.
  • If previously undergone highly invasive uterine surgery.
  • Carrying multiple foetuses.
  • If you are HIV positive.
  • An outbreak of genital herpes.
  • Your baby is in breech (bottom first) position.
  • Your baby is larger than usual (macrosomia).
  • A case of placenta Previa.
  • Fibroids which might act as hindrances to deliver vaginally.
  • A serious condition of preeclampsia.
  • Your baby has an abnormality or malformation.


Although you have a vaginal delivery plan ready, sudden complications might lead your doctor to perform an emergency C-Section under these circumstances.


  • Your labour is stalled or prolonged more than usual.
  • Your baby has an irregular heartbeat and cannot withstand a vaginal delivery.
  • Your baby’s oxygen supply is cut off due to your placenta getting separated from your uterine wall or due to the umbilical cord slipping out of your cervix.
  • If there is a chance of uterine rupture.
  • If you or the baby develop a life-threatening condition during labour.
  • If your contractions aren’t strong enough to dilate your cervix.
  • If other methods like forceps or ventouse assisted labour fail.


Fear not mommy, under any of these circumstances the safety of you and your baby will be your doctor’s utmost priority.



If you are undergoing an elective caesarean procedure, then you can pack your bag accordingly. Some people say that cranberry juice helps them keep away urinary infections that arise due to the insertion of catheter. They also advise carrying chewing gum or other molasses to ensure proper bowel movement after surgery. It is best to leave your jewellery, contact lens, braces and false tooth (if you have any) back home before heading to the hospital. Remove your nail polish and your make up before your procedure as it is necessary to monitor your skin tone throughout and after the surgery. Once at the hospital, a nurse might shave some of your pubic hair to prep you for surgery. You will sign a consent form and after a few diagnostic tests, your will be administered the anaesthesia and soon, you would be heading to the operating room to bring out your baby.

In case of emergency C-Section, you or an immediate kin should sign the consent form and the rest would be taken care of by your doctor and nurses.



Unlike vaginal delivery, C-Section is major surgery. With any surgery, comes a set of complications. Some of which could be easily resolved, and some might require a proper treatment plan. After a C-Section, you would feel sore or experience some pain in the area surrounding the incision. You might develop wounds in the incision site if there is no proper maintenance of hygiene. You might sustain surgical injuries to the bladder and uterus. You might develop some blood clots in your legs or pelvic areas. Some mothers might experience severe headaches as an allergic reaction to anaesthesia. You might experience a foul-smelling vaginal discharge (endometritis) if there is an infection or inflammation in your uterine wall.  Do not be scared as your healthcare providers would be well equipped to free you of these complications if they arise.


Recovery Period

Within 24 hours of your procedure, the nurse might ask you to start gentle, slow movements like walking to the bathroom. You would be advised to drink a lot of fluids and practice a healthy diet to ensure easy digestion and avoid constipation. Your incision site would be cleaned regularly. Once you go home, you should maintain utmost hygiene. You should avoid lifting heavy weights or any strenuous activities until your wounds heal thoroughly. Avoid sexual intercourse until your doctor gives you the green signal. Rest well throughout the recovery period and keep up with your doctor appointments.


Differences Between Natural Birthing and C-section

  • A normal birthing process might last for 12-14 hours, especially if it is your first time. But a C-Section will only take 15-45 minutes (75 maximum) from start to finish.
  • Complications during a vaginal delivery might be perineal tears or episiotomy whereas during a C-Section you might experience any of the complications mentioned above.
  • The recovery and healing process for vaginal deliveries are relatively lesser when compared to C-Section as the latter is a surgical procedure.
  • The risks to a baby delivered through C-Section are very minimal but sometimes there are chances of developing respiratory problems as the fluid from its lungs aren’t released during the process unlike the labour process (vaginal delivery).

The time:

The baby shower depends on the community and the household which conducts it. While a few families prefer to host it after the completion of the seventh month of the mother-to-be, a few others prefer it to be after the completion of the eighth month. Sometimes, a godh bharai is altogether unheeded and people choose to organize a ceremony after the birth of the baby. The basic idea is to conduct the ceremony when both the baby and the mother are in a safe place which is mostly assured after the seventh or the eighth month.


The ritual:

The essence of the ceremony, despite the various ways of celebration throughout the country remains the same- to bless the unborn child and pray for the health of both the baby and the mother. The mother-to-be is anointed with special oils by the elders of the family and dressed up. It is an occasion for festivities where special offerings are made to God and a puja is performed. As mentioned earlier, the ritual varies from region to region. For instance, in Bengal, it is considered bad luck to bring gifts to the mother. She is fed with delicious food while the elders pray for the health of her baby. It is quite incredible that in a 365-day calendar year, you can get pregnant maybe 12 of those days, if you have regular cycles. Imagine - An egg drops, maybe in the fallopian tube for 24 hours, gets fertilised; and the ovulation window is closed! That’s quite a lot of effort to get pregnant in such a small window-time. So, it is important that you become fertility aware, to know what the clues are, and save yourself from a lot of fertility faux pas that you might end up making.



Period Before Pregnancy : Understand your Power Window

Know that your fertility is not skin deep. There are no censors for your fertility. You have to chart out when you might be ovulating. Every woman would bleed after every ‘x’ number of days. A cycle may be a standard one with 28 days, a short one with 24 days, or a long one between 32-35 days. The entire duration of this cycle depends on the time between the period and ovulation. There are always 13-15 days between ovulation and the next period, irrespective of the duration of the cycle as a whole. So you could mark the expected date of your next period on a calendar, and go back 13-15 days, that are supposed to be the most fertile.


However, if you have an irregular menstrual cycle, do not conclude that you cannot get pregnant. It is all about ovulation again. On consulting your gynaecologist, you could get an ultrasound done to know your window, or you could regularise your cycle with medication and calculate your ovulating time, as explained above. 



Period After Pregnancy : Your Chum has come back again, to say Hi!

After a successful attempt at getting pregnant, while you think you are done bleeding for an average of 9 months, the first trimester can sometimes bring back your old acquaintance!


Spotting or bleeding in the first trimester of pregnancy is common. 2 or 3, out of 10 women bleed in early pregnancy, and there are reasons, problematic or not, as to why that happens. Spotting is a term used for light vaginal bleeding. This bleeding is lighter than a period, and may be brownish, pinkish, or red in colour. Usually around day 8-10, after ovulation, when the embryo is brewing into the lining of the womb, spotting or bleeding may take place. Sometimes, this leads a woman to think that this is her period and that she is not pregnant at all, if she is not experiencing any other symptoms. As alarming as bleeding can be, it is usually nothing to worry about. You may be offered an ultrasound just to ensure there is a gestational sac with an embryo, and if you are far enough along a little heartbeat, this is quite reassuring.


Women who conceive with the help of fertility treatment are more likely to experience spotting. If two or more embryos are placed into your uterus and one stops developing, this may trigger a small bleed due to the loss of an embryo. This loss is called ‘The Vanishing Twin,’ in which case, you must contact your place of treatment for advice. They may advise an early ultrasound. Multiple pregnancies are at a greater risk of miscarriage. Some women worry that having an ultrasound done will increase their bleeding, or indeed cause a miscarriage, but doctors assure that there is no danger of that happening due to a transvaginal ultrasound. The most common causes of spotting, irrespective of the stage of pregnancy are :

Breakthrough bleeding happens when you normally expect to have your period. This can therefore happen at 4, 8, or 12 weeks. This bleeding is usually lighter than a menstrual period. It is possible to experience breakthrough bleeding more than once. In a small number of cases, repeat breakthrough bleeding leads women to believe they are not pregnant when in fact they are. 


2.      Implantation Bleeding

Pregnancy and the hormone, Progesterone stimulates the growth of rich blood vessels. They nourish the lining of the womb. When a fertilised egg embeds into the lining, it may cause some bleeding. This bleeding is called Implantation Bleeding. For some, it is a small amount of brown blood, for others it may mimic a period and be bright red. Implantation bleeding occurs during the first few weeks following conceptions and can be one of the first symptoms of early pregnancy.

So you think you might be pregnant? It’s a bit of a guessing game until you know for sure. Caught yourself googling 'signs of pregnancy' yet? (We're just going to assume the answer to that is a resounding yes). Well, if every twinge and pang is keeping you preoccupied, and you are wondering if they mean anything, you're in luck. So that you know exactly what to look out for, here’s a scoop on the early signs of pregnancy, from the obvious to the, frankly, pretty weird ones. Missing a Period

Let’s start with the obvious one. Missing a period! Women whose menstrual cycle is a regular one, will miss a period around about 4 weeks after their last one, which means that you will be about four weeks pregnant. 



Another really obvious one is nausea. It is a bit of a misnomer to call it morning sickness, as it’s really all-day sickness! Professionals tend to call it ‘pregnancy sickness’. Bollywood loves to use this one where the woman gets up in the morning and rushes straight to the washroom. If only it was that simple! Really what is happening is that the hormone HCG is growing in your system and this causes you to feel sick. It starts around the 6th week, and usually ends around about the 13th week, but for some, it can last longer. 



One of the ones you may not know is implantation. It is supposed to be a short sharp pain, in your lower abdomen. The pain that you are feeling is basically the fertilised egg implanting in the wall of your womb. It feels like a pinching sensation, but not everyone gets that symptom. 


Implantation Bleeding

The next one is linked to the last one – implantation bleeding happens to some women. This bleeding is not heavy, fresh, red bleeding, but brown or pink when they wipe the region. This is the egg implanting in the wall of the uterus. The bit of the wall of the uterus that it is implanted into then comes away and what you have is bleeding. Usually it is light, so women tend to mistake it for the start of their period. 



Next one is the most common physical symptom of them all - extreme tiredness. This starts around when you miss your period and goes all the way up to the 13th week. This is not the kind where you feel like going to bed half an hour early, instead, it is all consuming, absolutely crashing-on-the-sofa by the end of the day tiredness. This is due to your changing hormones. 


Sore Breasts

Another one, which is again common, is sore breasts. They may feel heavy, sore or tender. Some women describe it as a tingling sensation, yet others say it is a pinching sensation behind the nipples. Your body and your boobs are responding to progesterone, the "pro- gestation" hormone. 



Another symptom is having a backache, often confused with the start of a period pain. This is the hormone relaxing going through your system and relaxing every muscle. But it can throw your back out!


Cervical Mucus

Then there is another sign which is slightly on the graphic side – cervical mucus. When you are pregnant, initially you start to get lots of thin, sticky, cervical mucus. However, as you advance, the progesterone in your body builds, and makes it much thicker and stickier. Delightful! This can start at any point. Your hormones are always producing discharge, but you might notice this quite soon after you miss your period. The discharge will continue all the way through your pregnancy, but it will change in the way it looks as time goes on. 


Heightened Sense of Smell

Next one is a heightened sense of smell. It means you have the snout of a dog and can smell things at 20 paces. Usually the biggest culprits are milk, eggs and the smell of cooking, especially the "tadka". A lot of women say they have a funny taste in their mouths in early pregnancy, which is called dysgeusia. This is usually down to your progesterone again, coming back to give you a kick in the bump! Dizziness is also very common and linked to the previous sign. The progesterone dilates your blood vessels, which means that your blood pressure drops, and can make you feel light headed and dizzy.  


Difference in Skin

A lot of women describe their skin being different whilst they are pregnant. In the early stages, you might notice that your skin goes bad, full of pimples, or you might find that it actually gets a lot better. Women tend to go one way or the other. However, it is down to the hormones once again and it usually passes around week 13.

Water Birth Delivery : What is it?

It is a process in which the mother labours in water that is temperature controlled.  In the presence of doctors and other medical professionals, she delivers the baby inside a water pool. During labour, a mother’s body is under extreme duress, physically. Therefore, warm water is able to relieve their labour pain, and calm the body down naturally. Some even find it soothing and comforting as they feel less pain.


Some of the benefits of labouring in water or water birth are not just for the mother, but for the baby as well. For the mother, warm water becomes a pain relief - a natural one. There is a sense of comfort driven from the weightlessness in water. It might also shorten the labour duration, in some cases. As for the baby, he or she, after having lived in the warmth of their mother’s womb, is delivered into an environment of the pool that is simulated (temperature controlled).


What is to be Considered?

The first step if you are thinking about water birth delivery is to approach your doctor, and talk about it. Your maternity hospital should have a birth pool, to be able to provide you a medical service. Water births are still quite rare in India. While some hospitals may have staff that are skilled, others may not be able to provide you the facilities. You may want to find out about the following from your doctor :

  • How many women have delivered in the pool for water birth?
  • Do they get relieved from the pain?
  • How trained is the staff for a water birth in their hospital?
  • Will the water birth pool be available when your labour is due? What if it is not available? What will be the alternative? 

Eligibility to Opt Water Birth Delivery

There are a few specific circumstances under which the option of labouring in pool water can be considered. Women who are at low risk usually can labour in water. The position of the baby should be correct. There must be no previous complications, and labour should not have to be induced, but start on its own.


Water birth delivery is not recommended for those women who have definite labour conditions, like Diabetes, High Blood pressure, Epilepsy, among others.


Its Practicality

A water birth experience of one mother may differ from the other. In a standard process, it starts when pains of labour become intensified, and there is active labour. The mother is then asked (by her doctor) to step inside the pool. The temperature of the water is controlled before she enters the water pool, and monitored while she is inside to suit her comfort. Once inside, she is asked to assume a position she finds herself to be most comfortable in. The body temperature of the mother is periodically checked. With the use of equipment that is waterproof, the health of the baby is kept under observation.


Sometimes, additional pain relief medication is also provided (on the doctor’s administration). Small portions of nutrition and hydration in the form of curd, soft fruit,  or similar are provided to the mother. Partners can become active participants in helping the mother take the nutrition. They can help mothers relax by massaging shoulders, between contractions.


After a few cries and pushes, the baby swims out, and is allowed to settle in the mother’s arms. Both are let out of the pool, are dried and warmed to be carried to a bed.


Is It For You? - Sure, a water birth delivery guarantees a comparatively relaxed experience, but there might be situations where the mother who is in labour is made to shift to the hospital bed if and when complications arise - problems like a rise in temperature of the body, possibility of infections if the water breaks before going to labour, or the risk of heavy bleeding while inside the pool. 


Its Popularity in India

While the process of water birth delivery is natural, it still has a long way to go in India.

A ready and large supply of clean water and other disposable equipment is necessary to manage a water birth delivery. Adequate training of medical staff, certified midwives, and doctors is needed. Before it is more widely offered to women, protocols need to be in place.


Finally, while the idea of a water birth experience and getting to do away with the pains surrounding delivery can sound exciting, they are not for everybody. It requires the watchful eyes of a skilled doctor, best equipment, good experience of the medical staff, and most importantly, a pregnancy with no complications. Before you make a decision on whether you want to deliver your baby in a birthing pool or not, remember to consult your doctor to find out what can work best for you and your baby.

It's time you know the truth! Let us debunk a few myths about giving birth for you.

Pregnancy to a large extent makes a tricky topic. As a result, it is nothing but only likely, if you are pregnant, to be greeted with different kinds of advice every now and then from all directions- be it from family, relatives or friends. Although most of these tips brimming in your surroundings are friendly and well-intentioned, yet it becomes a matter of utmost necessity for you to separate fact from fiction. Most of them are overtly absurd and hence should not be misunderstood or worried about because there exists absolutely no truth behind them.


Although most of these myths about giving birth are related to the nine months of prepartum developments, some of them are directly concerned with delivery of the baby. Myth: Movement of your baby will stop before you go into labour

The truth behind this is that your baby might become less active when you are nearing labour but there is still a certain amount of movement that goes on per hour. If that is not the case, it is advisable that you call your doctor immediately.


Myth: Labour can be induced by applying certain tricks

Although there are a number of stories revolving around ways to bring labour naturally, none of these suggestions have been proven to have helped in the process. Following are the most commonly used:

  • Intake of castor oil

Myth: A C-section delivery deprives you of a vaginal birth in the future

It is very much possible for you to give birth vaginally after a C-section delivery, and is only one of the myths about giving birth. It is called a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean. However, it also depends on certain factors like your health and the incision/cut in your last cesarean delivery. If this cut was of low transverse, VBAC can be a safe option. However, only your health specialist or your gynecologist can inform you about the risks and benefits in your case.


Myth: Being on your back while giving birth is ideal

You must choose the most comfortable position for yourself while you give birth. Although being in an upright position is helpful while giving birth, it is not necessary for you to be on your back. It has been proven that although certain positions are extra helpful, there is no position that can be declared the best amongst all of them.


Myth: TV representations of childbirth are accurate

It is to be taken into account that childbirth is nothing like the way it is represented on the TV. A number of movies, soaps or commercials portray childbirth as an extraordinarily dramatic and painful process. Therefore, all you need to do is sit back, relax and get in touch with your health specialist to acquire all the necessary information about the delivery process.


Myth: A mother can bond instantly with her newborn

Even though in some cases mothers bond immediately with their newborns, it is not true for a large number of women. Myth:  The ease of birth is defined by the size of hips and the baby

There is no doubt that the mother’s weight is quite relevant to the baby’s. Gaining more pregnancy pounds or less of the recommended weight can lead to complications during or after the birth of your little one. For instance, gaining lesser weight than what is recommended could result in the baby being underweight during birth. This may lead to implications such as difficulty in breastfeeding, more prone to neonatal mortality and illness later in life as well as cognitive developmental delays.

On the other hand, gaining more weight could result in the baby being born large which increases the implications of perinatal health risks. Additionally, it enhances the chances of Cesarean delivery and obesity of the child during the growth years.


Parts of your body prone to weight gain:

Naturally, gaining gestational weight differs from woman to woman. While gaining weight slowly and steadily is quite excellent, it is not unusual to not gain more than 1 to 2 kilos ( 2.2 to 4.4 lbs) in the first trimester. Many women have a growth spurt during which they may gain several pounds in a short time.

Essentially, your pregnancy weight resides in your baby but there are other parts of your body which carries the weight too. These include the amniotic fluid which surrounds the baby, weight in blood and body fluids, breasts, placenta, uterus etc. In addition to building the birthing sac, your body is also providing nutrients and blood supply to your baby in your womb, which is a cause of weight gain (Weight Gain During Pregnancy, 2020).


How can you ensure a healthy weight gain?

Now that you know how much weight you should maintain on an average, let’s get to the question of ‘how to do it’? Naturally, by maintaining a balanced diet you can keep the pregnancy pounds in check. Additional consumption of 300 calories a day is considered to be essential to have a healthy pregnancy. Here are a few steps you can keep track of to ensure that you are taking care of the necessary nutrients (Diet Chart for Healthy Weight Gain during Pregnancy, 2020).

  • Improve the quantity and nutrient level of your diet.
  • Ensure that your maternal nutritional needs for a healthy reproductive system as well as the nutrients supplied to the fetus are maintained.
  • The diet must provide continuous adjustment to body metabolism.
  • Ensure that you have a gap of at least 1 hour 30 minutes to a 2-hour gap between dinner and bedtime.


What should be included in your diet?

-         Cereals: whole wheat, multi-grain bread, wheat bread, bajra, ragi, jowar etc.

-         Pulses: green gram, soya beans, black eyed beans, horse gram

-         Fruits: two or three seasonal fruits daily, along with 25 gms of dried fruits

-         Vegetables: a cup a day with either lunch or dinner. Avoid having root and tubers

-         Raw salad: at least once a day

-         Green leafy vegetables: 3 times a week

-         Lactose: At least 400 ml of skimmed milk per day

-         Oil: 3-4 tablespoon of sunflower or safflower oil a day

-         Water and other fluids: 2 to 3 litres per day

-         Chicken without skin, non-fried fish or egg whites


What should not be included in your diet?

·         Excess coconut

·         Too much or sweets or candies

·         Deep-fried food

·         Soft drinks, honey, jaggery, ice cream, etc.

·         Pickle or processed foods

·         Flour based food like kulcha, naan, roomali roti

·         Too much of fats like butter, cheese, vanaspati, ghee, re-used oils

·         Caffeine intake to be limited to 300 mg per day.

·         Smoking, Alcohol and substance abuse is an absolute no-no.


Other things to remember:

If you are having a tough time maintaining the diet and monitoring your pregnancy pounds, you can avoid eating at a go and instead, continue with an intake of 5-6 times a day in small amounts.

Smoking may also lead to placental abruption or placenta previa  both of which might result in the tearing of placenta and cause excessive bleeding and threaten the lives of both mother and the baby. Smoking is also a leading inducer of preterm births.


How does smoking affect the baby?

Smoking during pregnancy can also lead to the fetus not receiving enough oxygen which slows down the growth of the baby. This can lead to low birth weight which exposes the baby to a lot of risks after being born. Smoking also doubles the risk of SUID (Sudden unexpected infant death) says a recent study by CDC. Due to oxygen deprivation, the baby may also be born with physical or mental disabilities. The baby of a smoking mother is also prone to cleft palate/lip, asthma and other chronic illnesses.


As mentioned above, the exposure of fetus to secondhand smoke may lead to SIDS, learning disabilities and ear infections after the baby is born. Hence it becomes extremely important for partners, family members , close friends and everyone else who comes in contact with the pregnant women to reduce or quit smoking. In today’s age one may wonder if vaping is safer than actual smoking. The answer is no. E- Cigarettes contain nicotine and other flavouring chemicals which might result in permanent brain damage for the baby. 


The information you need to quit

It is always a good time to quit

Even though it is advised to quit smoking before even getting pregnant, some women find it difficult to kick the butt, especially if they have been smokers for a longer time span. A lot of them ask if quitting cigarettes mid pregnancy might cause stress to the baby as withdrawal might cause stress to the mother. Quitting at any point of the pregnancy will only help your baby and never cause any distress. Whenever you don’t smoke a cigarette, your fetus gets more oxygen, which helps its development a little bit more. How to stop smoking?

The final question is how to quit smoking? The first step is to make up your mind. Do not yield to the temptation. Get rid of all the cigarettes in your environment. This also includes associated products like lighters and match boxes. Ensure you don’t put yourself into situations which bring you the urge to smoke. Hangout with non smokers only. Eliminate your triggers by consuming a healthy item of food or drink when you feel the need to smoke. There are also medications which your doctor may prescribe if quitting gets difficult for you. Hypnosis or alternate therapy could also be of help to you. 


If you are a concerned family member or a friend reading this article, your role is very important on the mother’s path to quit cigarettes. Along with making sure she doesn’t smoke, it is highly beneficial for everyone's health if you also quit smoking. Take care of the mommy to be and calm her down during the withdrawal phase. Is it Safe?

Looking at the general trends of sexual activity amongst pregnant women, researc shows that there is a lesser frequency of sex during the first trimester, followed by increased activity in the second trimester, and a decrease again in the third trimester. While in the first trimester there maybe apprehensions of a miscarriage, the last trimester brings with it fears of uterine contractions and early delivery. The important thing to keep in mind here is that, sex during pregnancy is absolutely normal and there is no hard and fast rule about how much sex is permissible in each trimester. It is all about the comfort of both the partners. Sex is considered absolutely safe in low-risk pregnancies. It is always better to consult your gynecologist and clarify with them as the risk factor associated changes from case to case.


The Comfort Factor

While sex and pregnancy can get along absolutely fine in most cases, it isn’t just safety that must be kept in mind. Comfort of both the partners, especially the mother, while indulging in such activities is to be carefully considered. As the pregnancy progresses, there are chances that the mother starts feeling less satisfied and may have difficulty in achieving an orgasm. Further, it can also start getting painful or uncomfortable if the partner penetrates too deeply.


Can it go wrong?

While it is generally considered safe to have sex during pregnancy, one cannot deny that there is the small possibility of some issues related to it. The possibility of these happening or causing complications isn’t very high. However, it is always good to be aware and stay prepared, just in case. Always consult your gynecologist to be safe. 

Preterm Labour: 

There is a slight chance that having sex during the last trimester of your pregnancy can cause contractions which could result in early labour for high risk pregnancy cases. Even so, remember that the studies conducted for this are minimal and there is no solid evidence to show that abstaining from sex can prevent preterm labour. It is more of a precautionary measure taken to minimise complications.


It is proposed that sexual activity can stimulate the cervix to result in haemorrhage or bleeding which could have extremely unpleasant results for women with placenta previa. There is no evidence to conclude this and is based on theoretical assumptions. However, in case of high-risk pregnancies, this becomes a reason to advise couples to stay away from sexual activity during pregnancy.

Venous Air Embolism: 

A complication that is very rarely observed, it is still good to keep in mind that oral sex and sex in rear entry position can cause issues in some pregnant women in the form of venous air embolism. While the occurrence is really low, the affected women faced severe complications often leading to death. It is nothing to panic and an open conversation with your doctor can help you clarify the risk involved in your pregnancy.

Braxton Hicks Contractions:

Having sex or an orgasm can set off uterine contractions known as Braxton Hicks Contractions. You may feel your uterus harden and it could get uncomfortable. No need to panic, as this is absolutely normal and no case for alarm. Try some relaxation techniques in case it gets too uncomfortable or simply lie on your back and breathe through them.  


Bonding with Your Partner

Pregnancy is a new step for both you and your partner and it is important to embark upon this journey together. Communication is the key here. While a lot of people may not have physical discomfort in having sex during pregnancy, they may have emotional or moral barriers. It is necessary that one respect these boundaries and openly communicate about what is okay for you and what is not. Remember that penetrative sex is not the only kind of sexual activity that you can indulge in. If you or your partner is not comfortable having sexual intercourse, discover other methods of enjoying physical intimacy. What is important is to be on the same page and remind yourselves that you are in on this together. 


Even when both partners want to indulge in sex during pregnancy, remember that it may not be like before or as easy. Thus, always consume your eggs after thoroughly cooking them and avoid any food products like lightly scrambled eggs, homemade mayo etc. which might contain raw egg or its components in them.


Undercooked Meat? Inedible

Although meat is a great source of nutrients, raw or undercooked meat isn’t good for you and your baby when you are pregnant. They could be hosts to several bacteria and parasites which can bring up ailments like epilepsy, neurological illnesses, and blindness in your child and diarrhoea and dehydration for you. You should also add cold cuts or processed meats to the list of foods to avoid during pregnancy.


No Sushi

Fish like Tuna, Swordfish, and Mackerel contain large amounts of mercury in them and should hence not be consumed when you are pregnant. It can cause serious problems for your baby. You can consume seafood which doesn’t contain mercury, but they should be fully cooked and not to be consumed raw. The bacteria in uncooked fish can cause Listeria, an infection which can be very dangerous for your baby.


No Unripe Papaya!

Although fruits are healthy, raw papayas are an exemption. They contain a milky liquid called latex in high amounts which can trigger contractions of the uterus. Hence, it is better to steer clear from papaya during pregnancy.


Nothing Unpasteurized

Be it milk, cheese or juice, if it is unpasteurized then it isn’t a healthy item to consume. Unpasteurized dairy can contain several bacteria like Listeria, E Coli and Salmonella which can prove to be fatal for your baby. Make it a point to consume pasteurized products and always boil your milk before drinking.


Cook Your Sprouts

Sprouts are said to be great sources of proteins, but do not consume them raw. The humid conditions in which seeds sprout helps the growth of Salmonella which are difficult to get rid off easily while washing. It is a safer option to cook sprouts well before eating.


Stop Eating Street Food

Street food is everybody’s favourite but unfortunately belongs in the category of foods to avoid during pregnancy. Chaats like pani puri, samosa and bhel puri are heavy on spices and are not ideal for the consumption of pregnant ladies. As there is no way to perform a quality check on ingredients used in their preparation, foods like kathi rolls and chowmein should also be avoided. Do not eat Indo-Chinese street food as it contains ajinomoto or Monosodium Glutamate which can put your baby at risk. 


Cut Down on Caffeine

You don’t have to give up your morning cup of coffee or occasional soda, but you have to manage the quantity. It is advised that pregnant women should not consume more than 200 mg of caffeine per day. The caffeine you consume passes on through the placenta to your fetus that doesn’t have the necessary enzymes to break it down. Thus, it can lead to a number of complications like low birth weight and SIDS in the baby and in the pregnant woman it can exacerbate insulin resistance which could cause gestational diabetes.


Definitely Ditch the Wine (and all other alcoholic beverages)

This one goes without saying, but consumption of alcohol during pregnancy is strictly prohibited. Even the smallest amount can have adverse effects on the baby which includes still birth or miscarriage and that is why you should stay away from alcohol until your baby is born. Do not consume alcohol if you are breastfeeding. Wait for the green signal from your doctor before you start to consume alcohol again.


Seed Safety

Fenugreek seeds used in everyday Indian cooking can induce uterine contractions if consumed in large amounts. Although these seeds are known as a potential galactogogue during breast feeding they should be avoided in large doses during pregnancy.


Other Tips

Avoid consuming any junk or processed food. You should also not consume organ meats in large quantities and do not eat any fruits or vegetables without washing them first as it can result in a number of infections.

As every pregnant woman’s body is different, your doctor might ask you to keep away from some other food items especially if you are prone to allergies. To avoid any confusion, it is advised to discuss your diet plan with your doctor as soon as you get pregnant.

Fetal Development in the Second Trimester: Week by Week

How your baby grows in your belly is magical! Here are all the details on your baby's fetal week by week development in the second trimester.

Are you in your second trimester already? Whoa, time does fly fast! Now is when your little angel grows inside you with their organs maturing gradually; their length and weight starting to increase.

The second trimester is roughly the fourth, fifth and the sixth month or the thirteenth to the twenty-sixth week of your pregnancy.

Usually, it is the ‘comfortable phase’ of the pregnancy when your morning sickness is most likely gone, your baby bump is not too big, and you can still wear your comfortable pair of jeans and with your favourite top or Kurti.

What is the fetal development like, and how is your little one growing? What are they doing? You must have a ton of questions. Let’s find the answers to a few:


Week 13th

Your baby is getting the nutrition you are providing, and this is evident from the fact that they have started releasing their urine into the surrounding amniotic fluid. The skin is still thin and transparent but will soon thicken. The bones are gradually getting harder, especially in the skull.

Week 14th

Now, your little one’s neck is more defined, and the formation of red blood cells have started. While the upper limbs are more proportionate, the lower limbs are yet to grow. A fine layer of hair called lanugo envelops the body to act as a protective layer for the skin. There may also be signs of hair development on the head.

The male or female genitalia is developing and thus, the baby’s sex is more apparent. However, it should be remembered that pre-natal sex detection is not allowed in India.

Week 15th 

Your little one’s scalp hair is more profound now, and bone development continues. If you are going for an ultrasound, you might be in for a wonderful surprise. You can see your little angel making a lot of faces which includes a lot of grimaces, smiles, squints and frowns. They are simply trying out their newly formed muscles.

The eyes and ears are moving to the due position, and they can make little reflex movements by now.



Week 16th

Excited for the 16th-week milestone? Your little sunshine’s lower limbs would have developed by now. Their toenails would start to form while the head becomes erect. The skin gets thicker and tinged pink while their eyes become sensitive to light.

Week 17th

By the following week, your baby would be more active, and you may even feel a slight kick or two now and then. Look out for the first one! It is a very special moment for a parent.

Their heart rate increases and they will have learned to breathe by now.

If your little one is a baby girl, then her ovaries would start having about six million eggs at this point for her entire lifetime.

The most fascinating part is, at this point, be it a boy or a girl, your baby would be the size of a ballpoint pen! 

Week 18th

The facial features are in due position and the eyes can detect light. The ears are perfecting their shape. They may hear sounds now and hence; you can start reading to them or singing a lullaby.



Week 19th 

Now, the fetal development will slow down. The arms and legs are well proportioned and your little one will continue to develop muscles.

Week 20th

At this stage, your baby would wiggle more and would regularly sleep as well as wake up. Your movement and any external noise play an important role in this.

Week 21st

Their sucking reflex develops, and they often suck their thumb. They gulp amniotic fluid and the bone marrow begins to produce red blood cells.  

Moreover, they would now be covered with vernix caseosa, a white creamy substance that acts as a protective layer around the body.



Week 22nd

Your baby’s hair and eyebrows grow. Their sense of sight and sound is more heightened.

The interesting part is, they have developed taste buds and your meals season the amniotic fluid which your baby can taste. Such differences of taste make your baby prefer your uniquely flavoured breast milk.

Week 23rd

It gets more fascinating now that your baby has their fingerprints and footprints. They have rapid eye movements now and will be gaining weight gradually.

Week 24th 

Your little one has pink, wrinkled skin now due to visible blood. The lungs are developing better, and they blink or startle on sudden noise.



Week 25th

Your angel would be well aware of your voice by now and may even respond through movements. Their closed eyes make rapid eye movement (REM) and the other sensory organs are well functioning. They are gaining weight gradually.

Week 26th

It is almost the end of the second trimester when your little one’s lungs produce surfactant that allows air sacs in the lungs to inflate and deflate. Their spine gets stronger and eyes are more sensitive to light. They are even capable of crying!


The second trimester of fetal development is when many internal organs of your baby will develop. Remember to have a healthy and balanced diet for your little one, to get adequate nutrition and taste.

From C Section to Natural Birth: Everything you Need to Know About Giving Birth

Natural birth or C-section, which is right for you? Look no more! This article will give you the clarity you're looking for.

A daunting thought that often worries a parent before the birth of their child is choosing between Cesarean section (C-section) and natural birth or vaginal birth. Creating a birth plan, in this case, can be quite exhausting, apart from research and overwhelming advice by everyone around. Be aware, neither is easy and both of these involve their own health risks as well as benefits. Your delivery procedure should depend on your health condition as well as that of your baby.  C-sections nowadays, can be carried out due to medical as well as social factors. This implies, choosing C section to natural birth can be voluntary or be opted in case of an emergency.


Why C-section?

During a vaginal birth, the muscles of the uterus contract to push the baby down through the ‘birth canal’, headfirst. The said ‘birth canal’ starts between the pelvic bone and the tail bone on top of the cervix which dilates during labour to accommodate the baby. The baby’s head stretches the perineum to move out of the vagina.


Which one is better?

This process is hurtful, for obvious reasons. Some women choose to take an epidural to dull the pain. This definitely makes it more tempting to choose C section to natural birth as it is more welcoming and less traumatic. However, there are pros and cons for both the process. For instance, in a vaginal birth or natural birth, the first contact between a mother and child is timely during a natural delivery which helps in establishing the child’s physiological health and mother child coordination. This is delayed in C-section due to anesthesia, emotional tension etc. The mother also successfully avoids the associated risk with surgery of bleeding, scarring infections etc. However, the tissue around the vagina may stretch and tear while the fetus is moving, leading to need for stitches and weakness or injury to pelvic muscles. They may also undergo some problems with their uterine or bowel movements. As for the baby, a longer labour hour may also cause injury such as a bruised scalp or fractured collarbone.

In contrast to this, C-section is less painful but more prone to risk of blood loss and infection. The mothers are less likely to begin early breastfeeding than that of a normal birth and more likely to have C-section for their subsequent deliveries, as well. The surgery is followed with severe side effects such as vaginal bleeding, coughing, sneezing and laughing. Uterine rupture is another common risk associated with C-section births. Hence, it is extremely important to be well-rested during such a time and let yourself heal. The rainbow in this method of giving birth is the minimal risk to the baby but even them, this cannot be guaranteed. Babies are prone to respiratory issues since the mothers do not go through labour which help in releasing fluid from the baby’s lungs. Research has indicated that C-section babies are more prone to negative impacts on their sensory perception. It also increases the risk of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among such children, along with a link found between autism and Cesarean section birth.

The Cesarean section was initially used as a solution for the problems associated with difficult labour but now has gained an increasing popularity worldwide. But it is not advisable to opt for a C-section if you do not have any complications. One of the most common reasons for a surgery is a natural breech, which occurs when the baby is in a breech position that is positioned fee-side-down in the birth canal. This increases the risk of the baby being delivered in terms of oxygen deprivation or brain damage. In such cases, an emergency surgery must be carried out. However, having a birth plan for a C-section definitely helps.
